Antarctica – the white wonderland
Antarctica is located on the south pole of the Earth; it is believed to be the coldest place on Earth. The coldest natural temperature ever verified on Earth was -89.2°C in Antarctica at Vostok Station on 21 July 1983. It is also denoted as a desert due to its extreme dry environment.
An estimate of the overall area of Antarctica is 14, 000, 000 km2 which comprises an ice covered area of 13, 720, 000 km2 and an ice free area of 280, 000 km2.
Approximately 98% of Antarctica is enclosed by ice; this encompasses roughly 70% of the world’s fresh water. It is assumed to be highest of all continents due to its dense ice cover, with an average elevation of around 2300m. The highest point measured on the continent is 4897m named Vinson Massif, whereas the lowest point measured is 2499m below sea level named Bentley Subgalcial Trence traced in West Antarctica. This trench is presumed to be covered with more than 3000m of ice and snow. The coastline which measures 17, 968 km and is typically categorised by ice formations, which can be shown by the following table.
Antarctica has typically three climatic regions: The inland of the continent is exceptionally cold with slight snowfall There are three climatic regions in Antarctica. The coastline regions have trifling temperatures and far greater precipitation rates In conclusion the Antarctica Peninsula zone has a warmer and drizzlier weather conditions, along with sub-zero temperatures widespread in the summertime.
